Is Obesity Eating You?

by Johnetta on August 11, 2010

Obesity and weight loss is an ongoing challenge for many women. Keeping the weight off is an even greater challenge.  During these times of high unemployment rates and no income for nutritious food , the subject of body weight is constantly in the news. Recently old news became new again by the announcement by CDC that no state had met the goal of 15% obesity prevalence The highest prevalence was among non-Hispanic Blacks overall. Prevalence is highest among African American women. The WSJ ranked states by obesity rates.

It’s in my thoughts, conversation, nursing knowledge base, wellness coaching and lifestyle management program. All of my professional expertise and skills are activated to inspire, encourage, assist and help clients set personal weight loss goals. After achievable goals become action steps they are implemented the kaizen way.

To curtail obesity, there is a lot of talk about reducing caloric intake and increasing exercise-decrease energy input and increase energy output. That’s a simple strategy. However, additional factors are involved in the weight loss process.

Factors affecting weight loss:

      What’s eating us?

      What motivates us to overeat?

We tend to eat more than we are aware of eating

      Eating mindlessly

What is eaten and the portion sizes

When and how do we eat?

How do we feel emotionally while eating

Look at American women of African descent, for example. We have a rich history and a long history of gathering in the kitchen. Joys, sorrows and the daily news was discussed in the kitchen.  Messages from other plantations were relayed in the kitchen. The ‘back door’- the kitchen door-was the only door slaves were allowed to enter. Food has been a part of socializing and eating too many calories lead to obesity, high blood pressure, etc.

Breaking the cycle of high blood pressure in the African Americans and other people of the world is easier said than done because of many additional factors.

This post is just the tip of the iceberg. Therefore, in future posts we will be looking below the surface of the iceberg.

What are your weight loss and wellness goals? What diets, exercise programs and products have you used in your weight loss plan?
